All the Pieces in Place

Morry Green could feel his heart slam right into his ribs. He’d been setting this thing up for months, yet he could scarcely believe that today – right now! – at this very moment! – all the pieces were falling into place. From where he hid in the trees across the road from the entrance to Amber Pines, Morry watched Wes, the gateman, leave the guard hut. It was 7:25 p.m. Perfect! Wes was leaving five minutes early for his break. Now Morry could scoot across the road, pass unseen through the unmanned security gate, and be inside his house in just under two minutes. He should know; he’d been timing this forever. Another two minutes for Naomi; two more to scatter some stuff around – to make it look like a break-in; one minute to tape the window and break it; and then two more to get back here into the park. Nine minutes. Add three for contingencies, and the magic number became twelve. Hard to believe. After years of marital agony, it would take only twelve minutes to find peace.

Morry took a deep breath, reached inside his coat, and set Sooki on the ground. The little shihtzu shook herself and, true to form, stood silently, waiting for a tug on the leash. Sooki knew the routine as well as Morry and had accepted his sudden interest in taking her for walks. That had begun last June, about six months ago. Every night at 7:00 p.m., no matter what the weather – that was another important piece – Morry Green snapped on the little dog’s leash, led her out the front door, and turned left toward the gate of Amber Pines, where he’d stop for a few minutes to chat with Wes, then cross the road into the park.

“Never misses, this guy,” Wes once said to the security supervisor. “Comes out with that little dog right at 7:00. Goes across the road into the park, and then bang, right at 8:00 he comes back. I swear he’d go out in a tornado. I never seen him miss!”

All part of the plan. Morry needed to be seen going out at 7:00 and returning at 8:00. And it had to be like clockwork. He always went through the park right to the south end too, where there was a tiny strip mall with a coffee shop at one end. Morry never went into the shop but over time he’d established a waving acquaintance with the staff. Sometimes he’d wave from across the street, sometimes from in front of the window. Sometimes he knew they failed to notice him but that was good, too, for he knew that in their minds, the guy with the little dog walked past at about the same time every single night.

Morry peered through the trees and checked for traffic both ways. Nothing! Excellent! He tugged at the leash and Sooki began to move with him gratefully.
